Gun Dog & Retriever Training
Field skills, steadiness, retrieving, marking, delivery, water confidence, and handler communication for practical hunting and hunt test work.
Family-owned working dog training
Established 1996
I work with most breeds, with a focus on Labrador Retrievers and Boykin Spaniels for field work, hunt tests, obedience, board-and-train programs, and boarding.
Complete retriever training
The carved Seegars Mill sign says a lot about us: rural, family-owned, and built around sporting dogs. I have been training Boykin Spaniels since 1981, with decades of hands-on retriever, field, obedience, and boarding experience behind the name.
Today, Janet, our two sons, and I keep that same practical approach going from our training grounds in Camden, South Carolina.
Camden, SC • Since 1981I bring a practical working-dog approach to retriever training, Boykin Spaniels, obedience, board-and-train programs, and daily boarding care.
Field skills, steadiness, retrieving, marking, delivery, water confidence, and handler communication for practical hunting and hunt test work.
We work with most breeds, with a primary focus on Labrador Retrievers and Boykin Spaniels.
I may have dogs available at different levels of training. Every placement starts with a call and a fit conversation so we can make sure the dog and owner are right for each other.
Practical manners, leash work, structure, confidence, steadiness, place work, and better communication for family companions.
Boarding is a large part of what we do, with room for up to 30 dogs, covered outdoor kennels, separate outdoor runs, and 20 air-conditioned inside spots.
Every dog and owner are different. Call me so we can talk through goals, fit, timing, and kennel space.
A focused three-week obedience program for practical manners, structure, confidence, and better communication.
Priority boarding for current and former training clients. General boarding may be available as space allows.
Availability varies by dog and training level. Placement requires a call and interview so we can confirm the owner is a good match for the dog, and the dog is a good match for the owner.
Training grounds
We train on our rural grounds at Seegars Mill Kennels in Camden, SC. The full property, including training grounds, covers more than 20 acres with two ponds, field space, decoys, cover, and hands-on handling.
About Our Family
I started training Boykin Spaniels in 1981 and have spent decades working with retrievers, field dogs, family companions, and handlers. My style is steady, practical, and built around clear communication.
Seegars Mill is family owned and run by me, my wife Janet, and our two sons, who help take care of the animals. Janet also helps with boarding and brings field trial experience of her own as a certified field trial judge who has run dogs in trials. Our background includes AKC and UKC hunt test work, Palmetto Retriever Club involvement, and military working-dog support recognized by the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines in 2009.
I began training Boykin Spaniels, building the foundation for our retriever work.
Our dogs earned AKC and UKC hunt test titles, ribbons, and field recognition.
I worked with American K-9 Interdiction and supported military working-dog training.
Janet, our two sons, and I keep Seegars Mill Kennels focused on practical dog work, careful boarding, and clients across South Carolina and the surrounding region, including clients from as far away as Charlotte.
Our story is backed by decades of ribbons, certificates, working-dog experience, and real dogs trained on real ground.
Boarding
We offer boarding primarily for current and former training clients, with limited general boarding accepted as space allows. Janet and our sons help me with daily animal care, and the kennel has room for up to 30 dogs, with covered outdoor kennels equipped with fans and misters, separate outdoor runs, plus 20 air-conditioned inside spots to rotate dogs through on very hot days.
Covered outdoor kennels, fans, misters, and air-conditioned inside rotation help support steady care in South Carolina heat.
We are rooted in working dogs, but the same steady handling helps family dogs build structure, confidence, and manners.
Our working kennel has covered dog areas, practical training grounds, and room for young dogs to develop.
